Do You Know? The Types of Clouds

Posted on

Clouds are collections of water or ice droplets in the atmosphere. Water droplets can form clouds due to the process of condensation of water vapor due to low temperatures in the atmosphere. Well, here are some types of clouds in the sky.

First Level Cloud

The cloud of the first level, the name is Cirrus. This cloud is at an altitude of above 5500 meters. Besides Cirrus, there are also other clouds, namely Cirrocumulus and Cirrostratus.

  • Cirrus: in the form of white clouds that are thin and fibrous like bird feathers. Cirrus clouds form when water vapor freezes into ice crystals at altitudes above 8000 meters.
  • Cirrocumulus: a layer of clouds that are shaped like waves on the beach, some are shaped like small spheres that are clustered. Oh yes, this Cirrocumulus member is sometimes formed from the fusion of Cumulonimbus (CB) clouds
  • Cirrostratus: shaped like fine and thin white fibers. The appearance of Cirrostratus clouds can cause halos, which are rays that form a circle in the sky as a result of the reflection or refraction of light sources.
Second Level Cloud

The second level cloud is called Alto. Alto clouds are at an altitude between 2000 meters to 5500 meters. The following are the types of Alto clouds in the second level.

  • Altostratus: These clouds are usually gray in color. Altostratus clouds are rain clouds. These clouds form at dusk and at night. When the sun comes up, the Altostratus clouds will disappear.
  • Altocumulus: shaped like a lump of cotton that is clustered. Usually white or gray.

Third Level Cloud

The third level cloud is called Stratus. Stratus clouds are the lowest compared to other cloud types. These clouds are at an altitude below 2000 meters.

  • Stratus: is at a low altitude, about 2000 meters. The shape of the clouds is wide and looks like fog.
  • Stratocumulus: shaped like balls that gather so that it looks like waves in the ocean. These clouds do not cause rain.
  • NImbostratus: irregular in shape, grayish-white in color, and causes drizzle.
Additional Cloud

In addition, there are also additional clouds called vertical clouds. There are two types of clouds that include additional clouds, namely Cumulus and Cumulonimbus.

  • Cumulus clouds: are at their lowest, but they can rise from low to moderate levels.
  • Cumulonimbus Clouds: Cumulonimbus clouds are large-volume clouds that rise from low to very high levels. Oh yes, these clouds are prone to storms and lightning.
