Animals with the scientific name African Spurred Tortoise is the third largest tortoise in the world. Let’s recognize it!

  • Sulcata comes from the word sulcus (Latin) which means groove. The average groove in the scales of a sulcata tortoise is 13.
  • Sulcata has a brownish shell with light yellow spots.
  • Sulcata can be kept as pets. Give the opportunity to bask in the sun for at least 20 minutes per day.
  • Sulcata is found in Africa, especially in the Sahara Desert. It lives in deserts and savannas.
  • Adult sulcata weigh up to 100 kilograms. Body length can reach 1 meter.
  • Sulcata age can reach more than 50 years. The oldest sulcata ever found in the Zoological Gardens of Giza in Egypt. It is 54 years old and weighs 105 kilograms.
  • Sulcata is the third largest tortoise in the world after the Galapagos tortoise and the Aldabra tortoise.
  • Sunlight can facilitate the digestive system of sulcata.
  • If kept in a large area and under low humidity, sulcata will live in their natural habitat.
  • Sulcata including turtles does not like to drink so urination is only about 0.64 millimeters per day. Much less than other turtles which are about 1-2 millimeters per day.
