  • Walruses are large mammals that belong to the family Odobenidae. There are two types of walruses, namely the Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens Illiger) and the Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus Linnaeus).
  • The Atlantic walrus prefer to live in the coastal areas of Canada and Greenland. While the Pacific walrus is more commonly found in the northern seas of Alaska and Russia.
  • Both types of walrus both have tusks near their mouths. The difference is, that the tusks of the Atlantic walrus are slightly shorter than that of the Pacific walrus.
  • The Atlantic walrus sliver is also flatter than the Pacific walrus. Oh yes, walrus tusks are actually elongated canines. Its function is to cut ice, catch prey, and protect themselves from predators.
  • Usually, walruses prefer to spend their time on the seabed. However, he also likes to relax on ice or on fields.
  • The walrus is a mammal that likes to dive. The diving speed is about 35 km/hour. His favorite foods are shellfish, worms, snails, sea cucumbers, shrimp, and small fish.
  • The weight of the two types of walrus is also different. The Pacific walrus can weigh up to 2000 kg, while the Atlantic walrus weighs about 900 kg.
  • The animal’s body is heavy because the fat is stored under its skin. The fat serves to keep the body warm.
  • Walruses are social animals, so they prefer to hang out in groups. Gathered together, the walruses stay warm.
  • To avoid predators, the female walrus will protect her young with her flippers and hold her to her chest, then dive into the water.
